The 2011 edition of Texas Super Lawyers lists 8 lawyers from AD&T in appellate law: Doug Alexander, Dana Livingston, LaDawn Conway, Kevin Dubose, Robert Dubose, Charlie Frazier, Roger Townsend, and Amy Warr. Susan Vance was listed in appellate law in the 2011 edition of Texas Rising Stars.
Additionally, Doug Alexander, Kevin Dubose, and Charlie Frazier were listed among the “Top 100,” and LaDawn Conway was listed in the “Top 50 Women.”
In July, Roger Townsend was featured in the Texas Lawyer column Appellate Lawyer of the Week. Roger---assisted by Dana Livingston and Kevin Dubose--- succeeded in overturning a $14 million judgment in a fraudulent-inducement case before the Fifth Circuit.
In May, Kevin Dubose was featured in Appellate Lawyer of the Week. Kevin---assisted by Jennifer Josephson and Anna Baker---successfully defended a substantial damage award before the Fourteenth Court of Appeals.
Susan Vance has been selected for inclusion in 2011 Texas Super Lawyers: Rising Stars Edition in appellate practice.
Texas Lawyer Media has published Robert Dubose’s book, Legal Writing for the Rewired Brain: Persuading Readers in a Paperless World. Robert’s book argues that recent technology has changed the way judges and lawyers read. Drawing from research about screen reading and web design, Robert makes suggestions for improving legal writing and advocacy. Robert’s book is available here.
Roger Townsend spoke at the In-House Counsel Summit in Houston in November on the topic “Quality or Profits: Which Should Come First in a Profession.”
AD&T was well represented at the Appellate Judges Education Institute in Washington D.C. in November. Roger Townsend was on a panel about “Building an Appellate Practice in the 21st Century,” and Robert Dubose was on a panel about “Re-imagining the Appellate Brief.”
Roger Townsend participated in a panel discussion on effective brief-writing at the 15th National Appellate Practice Institute, sponsored by the American Bar Association and held in Chicago in May. He was joined on the panel by Judge Carl Stewart of the Fifth Circuit, Arizona Supreme Court Justice Scott Bales, and Justice Martha Warner of the Florida Court of Appeals. Roger also critiqued the participants’ individual briefs and oral arguments with Judge Marjorie Rendell of the Third Circuit and Justice Bales.
Four AD&T attorneys spoke at the State Bar Advanced Appellate Seminar in September. Dana Livingston analyzed Fifth Circuit voting patterns; Doug Alexander explained Petition for Review practice in the Texas Supreme Court; Robert Dubose addressed the ethics of citing Internet sources outside the record; and Roger Townsend analyzed how to prevent mistakes in appellate practice and how to do damage control once mistakes are made.
